A rewards credit card can help you make the most out of your everyday spending. Every time you pay with your card, you’ll earn points or get cash back.
Rewards cards may charge higher interest rates or annual fees, but they come with competitive benefits that make up for the cost — like collecting points to redeem for travel, gift cards, and merchandise or getting cash back on all your purchases.
A standard credit card may not come with the same reward perks. If you don’t plan on using your card often and you don’t think you’ll take advantage of the rewards, this card may be a good option for you. Some standard cards come with lower interest rates and annual fees so you pay less charges.
Travel credit cards reward you with points so you can redeem for flights, car rentals, hotel rooms and more. When you use your travel card to pay for things, you’ll earn points for every dollar you spend. Plus, with Aventura cards you can get more points for travel-related purchases made through CIBC Rewards Opens in a new window.1.
Many travel credit cards come with extra perks too — like access to airport lounges, coverage for lost baggage and medical and trip cancelation insurance.
Standard credit cards may not have the same travel perks. This type of card can be a good choice for those who just need a simple card to pay for things while they build their credit.
Any credit card can help you build your credit as long as you use it responsibly. Making payments every month and staying below your credit limit shows creditors you can manage your money and stick to payment deadlines.
Here are some tips to help you build your credit:
A late credit card payment can hurt your payment history and credit rating, especially if it’s a pattern. Plus, you’ll have to pay interest on the balance and other late fees.
If you have trouble remembering to pay your credit card bill, set up scheduled payments from your chequing account to your credit card every month. Make sure you have enough funds in your account to cover the amount due.
Paying just the minimum balance will keep your account in good standing but it won’t save you on interest fees. Plus, carrying a balance each month means you’ll be in debt longer. Try not to spend more than you can afford to repay, and stick to a budget.
Going over your credit limit can lower your credit score, so try not to use all of your available credit at once.
Review your credit report and score regularly for mistakes or unauthorized activity. If you notice any issues, report them right away.
If you don’t have a regular source of income or enough money in the bank to cover your credit card bills, a credit card may not be right for you — consider a debit or a prepaid card instead.
